Following remarks by Dick Wade and Rita Goldman, the entire Lower School recited Langston Hughes' Daybreak in Alabama in unison. Readers then presented nine stories of students, representing each division.

Director of multicultural affairs Rita Goldman (center) welcomes Shannon Lanier (right) , a 23-year-old descendant of Thomas Jefferson and his slave Sally Hemings. Shannon and photographer Jane Feldman (left), the authors of Jeffersons Children: The Story of One American Family, were the keynote speakers.
