Argon
Chemical Structure
Argon is a Noble Gas. That is the same family as helium and neon
Fun Facts
Argon is in Lightning
It is used in electrical light bulbs, fluorecent tubes, photo tubes, and glow tubes.
Isolation
Argon is present to the atmosphere and is obtained by the liquefaction and separation of air. Argon is available to buy in large tubes.
Common Uses
Due to the low reactivity levels with electricity. Argon is used in lightbulbs to protect certain parts of it.
Appearance
At room temperature. Argon is a gas. However, it is not visible to the human eye.
Unusual Facts
It is used for Welding. Argon is not very reactive so it is a good thing when you use really hot temperatures. It makes it safer.
Argon is a non-metal and nearly an inert gas.
History and Discovery
Argon was discovered in 1894. However, it was first hinted to be real by Henry Cavendish much earlier. He found that by removing nitrogen and oxygen from the air, their was still a little bit of air left. He couldn't identify it. He didn't know it but this was Argon. In the 1890s, Sir William Ramsay repeated Cavedish's experiments. He had an advantage to Cavedish, he had higher technology. He found Argon in 1894.
