Germanium existence was predicted by Dmetri Mendeleev, in 1871. He predicted many other missing elements in the periodic table. He predicted that Germanium has similar chemical properties as silicon. Mendeleev predicament was surpsingly accurate.
Germanium was found in a mineral called argyrodite. It was discovered by Clemens Winkler in 1886. Germanium was named after Germany. Its origin name is Germania, the latin word for Germany.
You nomally don't need to Germanium in the labrotory because it is available comercially. You can get Germanium from the treatment of Germanium dioxide, GeO2. You can get it out of flue dust, but seperating it from zinc is difficult.
