Fun and Unusual Facts

Sir Humphrey David first isolated Mg in 1808

It is used in missles like the one to the left

It is used in flint and was recently used on "Survivor Heroes Vs. Villains."

It is the 8th most abundant element on earth.

History

In 1808, Sir Humphrey Davi discovered Magnesium. It is the 8th mokst abundant element in the earth's crust. It is in the alkaline earth metal so it does not occur uncombined with other elements. It is named Magnesium and named after a city in Thessaly called Magnesia.

Isolation Method

Magnesium can be obtained from brines, wells, and sea water as Magnesium Chloride, MgCl2. Use the electrolysis method and Mg and Cl will seperate.

Purification Method

To purify Magnesium, you will have to use the vacuum distilation method.
