Yttrium

Common and Household Uses

Common Uses: Yttrium is used as an additive for aluminum and magnesium alloys. Yttrium has a compound called Yttrium oxide, which is responsible for the red coloring in tube televisions. Hundreds of thousands of pounds are used to do this.

Household Uses: Yttrium oxide is also used for making yttrium iron garnets, which are used to make microwave filters.

Description: Yttrium is a silvery metallic metal that is found in almost all rare earth minerals, including moon rocks. Natural Yttrium has on isotope, 89Y. Nineteen other unstable isotopes have been found.

Fun Facts

Yttrium does not have to be made or found by everyday people because you can by it for $75/oz. It has many isotopes. It is stable in the air in its original form, but some forms aren’t. Yttrium can also be used in LASER SYSTEMS.

This is an example of a tube television. Yttrium is responsible for the red coloring in this tv.
